Housing & Vehicles

The housing options in Mauritius are varied and range from small apartment-type properties to large sprawling villas. Based on your needs and budget, you should be able to find what you are looking for but may need the assistance of a seasoned real estate agent. Most houses and apartments in Mauritius are rented out semi- or fully-furnished, so this is something to bear in mind, should you be considering shipping a container with you.

Should you be thinking about buying a house, there are various government schemes that allow foreigners to purchase property, such as the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS), the Real Estate Scheme (RES) and Property Development Scheme (PDS), as well as the newer Smart City Scheme (SCS). Some of these schemes even come with permanent residence, should you purchase a property over the minimum threshold of USD 375,000.

The cost of a vehicle in Mauritius is slightly higher than in other parts of the world, however there are many vehicles on offer to accommodate different tastes and budgets. Should you want to purchase a new car, you may lease it or purchase it outright with cash. There is also the option of a pre-owned vehicle, purchased from a dealer or privately, as well as Japanese imported cars. Both of these can be cost-effective possibilities.

All vehicles on the road are required to have insurance (normally bought for a year upfront), road tax (based on the engine size of your vehicle) and a fitness certificate, if your vehicle is more than 7 years old.

Many people who are new to the island prefer the option of long-term car hire, in which case all the road tax and car insurance is taken care of, and they have the freedom to take their time and find exactly what they want in a vehicle. There are numerous leasing companies that offer this service for a reasonable charge.

Chat to the neighbours and find out about water and electricity supply in your immediate area before settling on a property to rent or buy.
